Anthropic commits shares to a public benefit fund
On 18 October 2026 Anthropic announced the Anthropic Public Benefit Fund, a wholly owned LLC to which, subject to stockholder approval, it commits 5% of its shares, with a further 2% at the board's discretion for every 50% rise in the company's value above a set baseline. None of the equity held by the fund will be used for lobbying or political giving. Anthropic says that together with earlier pledges roughly 20% of its shares will be dedicated to the public good.
Why it matters
The commitment grows with the company: the share set aside for the public good rises with its value, and Anthropic sets this explicitly against the practice of escalating awards to executives. It is not yet in force, and the baseline valuation, structure and governance are left to later announcements. The fund's first example is disruption in the labour market, where Anthropic has already committed $200 million to research.
What the page says. Subject to stockholder approval, 5% of Anthropic's shares are committed now and the board may add 2% at its discretion for every 50% increase in the company's value above a set baseline; the baseline is not named. The fund is a wholly owned LLC rather than a 501(c)(3), to give flexibility between forms of giving: Anthropic mentions large donations to traditional nonprofits or direct distributions to specific populations. None of the equity held by the fund will be used for lobbying or political giving, in the US or abroad. The company says most of its mission work happens inside the company (research on AI safety and interpretability, applied biomedical research, discounts for nonprofits and scientific institutions) because it has both a public benefit and a for-profit component. Earlier commitments. At founding the co-founders pledged to donate 80% of their equity; an equity donation match programme lets employees pledge equity that Anthropic matches, with about half of employees taking part. Combined with this announcement, Anthropic says "roughly 20% of Anthropic shares" will be dedicated to the public good, plus any extra percentage from valuation milestones. On labour-market impacts the company has already committed $200 million. What the record does not claim. Stockholder approval was not read here; Anthropic promises to share the structure, governance and valuation milestones "in the coming months", so they are not in the record. The overall share of "20%" is the company's own figure, with no verified calculation given.
