Spark 2.0: large Gaussian worlds in the browser

On 14 April 2026 World Labs released Spark 2.0, an open-source Gaussian-splat renderer for the web with level of detail, streaming and virtual memory; release v2.0.0 appeared on GitHub the same day.

Why it matters

Gaussian scenes of hundreds of megabytes can now be viewed on a phone: the renderer picks the detail itself and loads what is needed. An editorial assessment: this is open-source engineering work; the post gives no numerical comparison with other renderers.

By the post, consumer devices usually render 1 to 5 million splats in motion, while large scenes weigh 100 MB or more; Spark 2.0 builds a tree of levels of detail, delivers data coarse to fine and keeps a fixed GPU memory pool as a page table. The per-frame splat budget is 500 thousand to 2.5 million depending on the device; there is a .RAD format and a build-lod tool (Rust compiled to WebAssembly). The sparkjsdev/spark repository has a v2.0.0 release of 14 April 2026 (01:28 UTC) and an MIT licence; Spark came out last year (the repository dates from 23 May 2025). What the record does not state. The post gives no frame-rate tests or comparisons with other renderers. The figures “over 100 million splats” and “up to 40 million” are claims by the authors of demonstrations, not a World Labs measurement.
