AMD agrees to buy World Labs
On 28 September 2026 AMD announced a definitive agreement to acquire World Labs, Fei-Fei Li’s lab; the all-stock deal is valued at about $8.2 billion, with closing expected by the end of 2026.
Why it matters
The best-known independent world-model lab becomes part of an accelerator maker, and its founder that company’s chief scientist. An editorial assessment: both sides explain the deal by the need to bring models and hardware closer; this records the signing, not the completion.
From AMD’s release: a definitive agreement to acquire, all stock, valued at approximately $8.2 billion, closing expected by the end of 2026 subject to regulatory approvals; after closing Fei-Fei Li becomes executive vice president and chief scientist of AMD, reporting to Lisa Su, and the World Labs team continues model research. By World Labs’ own post, Justin Johnson and Ben Mildenhall lead the team with her; the partnership with AMD began last year with model training and inference optimisation on AMD GPUs; Su, by Li’s letter, was an early investor. What the record does not state. The price is AMD’s figure and “approximately”; no per-share terms are in any document read. World Labs writes “joining”, AMD “acquire”. No document says what becomes of Marble and Atlas. The pledge of “open models” is the parties’ intention. The deal is not closed: if it collapses or changes, this record needs correcting. TechCrunch’s comparison with Nvidia is the outlet’s own assessment.
