The first World Humanoid Robot Games
Beijing held the first World Humanoid Robot Games: 280 teams from 16 countries and over 500 robots, competing in 26 events made up of 538 individual contests.
Why it matters
A standing multi-country event with scored categories turns scattered manufacturer demonstrations into a comparable field under one set of rules, not least through the scenario events, which test work rather than spectacle. It is the second and broader instance of humanoid capability being measured by a third party.
The competition took place at the Beijing National Stadium and the National Speed Skating Oval. Events fall into four categories: competitive sports, performance, scenario events based on real-world applications, and peripheral events. Scenario events included cleaning and medicine sorting, alongside track, football and boxing. In autonomous football and in the relay, robots fell repeatedly.
