NVIDIA Hyperion and Halos SAFE in Europe
On 21 October 2026, at GTC Berlin, NVIDIA announced that Volvo Cars is adopting its Hyperion computing platform and Alpamayo software stack for automated driving, that Bolt has selected the Alpamayo Stack for a European robotaxi programme, and that Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles and Einride are showing use cases on Hyperion. NVIDIA also introduced Halos SAFE, a framework for generating traceable safety evidence, and a two-billion-parameter driving model, Alpamayo 2 Edge.
Why it matters
A chipmaker's platform is being offered to European carmakers and operators as a ready base for level 3 and level 4 driving and robotaxis, with a safety-evidence framework attached. Almost everything here is a plan or a demonstration: the one operator plan with a year is Bolt's, which intends to begin gathering driving data in Madrid in 2027, subject to approval.
What the release says. Volvo Cars is "adopting" Hyperion and Alpamayo Stack; Bolt "has selected" Alpamayo Stack for its European robotaxi programme, starting with future Lucid vehicles built on Hyperion, with data gathering in Madrid "in 2027" subject to regulatory approval and a "planned European rollout of at least 25,000 level 4-capable future Lucid vehicles"; Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles and Einride are "showcasing selected use cases", "demonstrating potential applications"; Mercedes says MB.DRIVE ASSIST PRO "will soon get approval" in Germany. Halos SAFE (Safety Assurance Framework for Evaluation) was built with dSPACE, IVEX and TÜV Rheinland; its ecosystem also includes JLR, Mercedes-Benz, Volvo Cars and others. Alpamayo 2 Edge is a 2-billion-parameter model for DRIVE AGX Thor, designed to run at 10 Hz. Also: new Cosmos 3 Nano variants for simulation, the Cosmos Data Factory blueprint for driving data, Alpamayo Agentic Factory "expected to become available in early 2027", and an Uber and NVIDIA data factory. The Porsche and Voxel51 comparison ("up to 90%" fewer test drives, "up to 85%" shorter cycle) is an expectation, not a measurement. What the record does not claim. The page does not say that robotaxis on Hyperion are already driving in Europe: everything is a selection, an adoption, a plan or a demonstration, and the numbers are forecasts of NVIDIA and its partners. The Alpamayo 2 Edge and Cosmos 3 Nano model pages were not read. This is the company's own release.
