Executive Order 14434 renames AI

On 29 September 2026 President Trump signed Executive Order 14434, "Inaugurating the Era of Super Intelligence". It directs executive agencies to use "Super Intelligence" and "SI" in place of "Artificial Intelligence" and "AI" in correspondence, public communications, websites, reports and other non-statutory documents, and to "not acknowledge" the older terms. The order defines SI as the technologies already covered by the statutory definition of AI and gives the President's science adviser 60 days to propose legislative language for a federal definition. It was published in the Federal Register on 2 October.

Why it matters

No new technology, power or rule is created: section 3 ties the new words to the existing statutory definition, and existing regulations, contracts and historical documents stay as they are. What changes is the language of federal documents: from this point sources from the US executive branch (and the records of this atlas that quote them) say "super intelligence (SI)" where, before the order, the same technology was called AI. The 60-day proposal could turn the label into a legal definition that differs from the current one.

What the order says. Section 1 gives the reasoning: American scientists first gave the field its name; today's frontier systems "do much more than imitate or automate discrete aspects of human intelligence" and "increasingly represent not merely artificial intelligence, but a new era of Super Intelligence". It is therefore the policy that, "to the maximum extent permitted by law", the executive branch "shall use the terms Super Intelligence and SI in place of Artificial Intelligence and AI and will not acknowledge the usage of Artificial Intelligence and AI in any applicable setting". Section 2(a) applies this to "official correspondence, public communications, websites, reports, policy documents, and other non-statutory documents"; 2(b) says nothing requires altering previously issued regulations, presidential actions, contracts, grants or other historical documents. Section 3(a) defines SI and Super Intelligence as "the technologies and systems encompassed by the term artificial intelligence as defined in section 9401(3) of title 15, United States Code", until superseded by later presidential action or an Act of Congress. Section 3(b): within 60 days of the date of the order the Assistant to the President for Science and Technology (APST), in consultation with agency heads, submits to the President proposed legislative language for a federal definition "that reflects the capabilities described in section 1", with an assessment of whether and how far it should modify or supersede the statutory definition of AI, conforming amendments and recommendations for further executive action; counted from 29 September, the 60 days end around 28 November. Section 4 is the usual general provisions: no new rights, subject to appropriations. Dates. Signed on 29 September 2026 (the White House page, the Federal Register); published on 2 October 2026 at 91 FR 63129, document 2026-20321. The White House issued a fact sheet the same day, which describes the order as replacing the term in the executive branch "to recognize the continuously advancing technological frontier", and recalls that in March 2026 the White House unveiled what it now calls the "National Super Intelligence Policy Framework" (the record on the request to Congress describes the March legislative recommendations under their title of the time, "National Policy Framework for Artificial Intelligence") and that the federal government has announced more than $5 billion for the Genesis Mission. What the order does not do. It creates no body and no regime for "super intelligence" as a distinct class of system. It does not rename statutes: federal law keeps using "artificial intelligence" until Congress or a later presidential action changes it. What the record does not claim: whether agencies comply, whether the proposed definition is delivered on time, or what it will say.
