Defence ministry: AI in imagery intelligence
On 28 August 2026 the Ministry of Defence said AI already saves up to 90% of the time of Defence Forces analysts at the stage of detecting signs of the enemy on photos and video, finding positions and equipment by itself. The ministry stressed the human-in-the-loop principle: a person makes the decision to strike.
Why it matters
The ministry puts two things on the record: AI is already part of the intelligence chain, and the final decision to strike stays with a person. The figure "up to 90%" is a self-assessment with no method, sample or independent check, and it is an upper limit, not an average.
What the page says. AI saves "up to 90%" of analysts' time at the stage of detecting signs of the enemy on photos and video, analysing imagery and finding enemy positions and equipment by itself. Ukraine "systematically adheres" to the human-in-the-loop principle: the technology helps detect a target and speeds up its assessment, but the final decision to strike stays with a person. AI, the ministry says, also speeds up the whole kill chain, from detecting a target to assessing the result. What the record does not claim: which system or supplier; how and on what 90% was measured, against what baseline; how many images; the rate of false detections. Nor does it claim the human-in-the-loop principle has been independently checked: it is the ministry's statement about its own practice.
