California permits Nuro passenger pilots with a driver
On 7 May 2026 the California Public Utilities Commission issued Nuro permit TCP0047827-P to take part in the drivered autonomous-vehicle passenger-service pilot programme. The permit is valid to 7 May 2029 and bars charging for rides.
Why it matters
Another autonomous-driving developer received a regulator's permit to carry passengers, though without fares and with a driver. An editorial assessment: this is an early step, not a paid service without a driver.
What the permit says. The application is dated 9 April 2026; vehicles seat fewer than 16 people including the driver; condition 12 bars accepting monetary compensation for transportation in test vehicles; condition 15 grants an exemption from the vehicle-list requirement for twelve months. What the record does not claim. The permit does not authorise driverless or paid operation. Uber and Lucid are not named in the document: press reports tying them to it are not part of this record.
