Midjourney opens its beta to everyone
On 13 July 2022 Midjourney announced an open beta: anyone could join its Discord server and generate images from a text prompt, with a limited number of free generations. Before that, by Motherboard's account, David Holz had opened access to all for 24 hours.
Why it matters
A text-to-image generator became available without a waitlist, its whole interface a chat in which a bot shows the generation as it renders. It came a week before DALL·E 2's paid beta.
By Motherboard's account the 24-hour test began on Monday night and became a fully open beta on Wednesday; the rules asked users not to create abusive, shocking or adult content.

The company post went out at 06:41 UTC on 13 July 2022, which is 12 July in Pacific time; Motherboard on 18 July names Wednesday, 13 July, as the day of the open beta. PCWorld, whose article was rewritten into September, gives 18 July and the following Tuesday.
