DeepMind enters the register
On 23 September 2010 the UK companies register incorporated company 07386350 as Friars 2022 Limited, with M&R Secretarial Services as secretary and a Cambridge address. On 15 November it was renamed DeepMind Technologies Limited, and on 7 December Demis Hassabis became a director and Mustafa Suleyman secretary. Shane Legg and Suleyman became directors only on 23 December 2011.
Why it matters
The laboratory the atlas knew only from its purchase in 2014 gets a beginning in a document rather than in a retelling. The register shows that in its first year the company had one of its three founders as director, and that all three left those posts on the day the owner changed.
The activity code in the register is 72190, other research and experimental development on natural sciences and engineering. Shares were allotted on 22 December 2010, leaving capital of GBP 280. Until 7 December the director was Tom Pickthorn, at the same Hills Road address in Cambridge as the secretary. What the record does not claim: the register states no purpose of the company, so the research report's description of it as an enterprise building general intelligence is not supported by this source. Nor does the register give a publication before the purchase; in the atlas that is the Atari paper of 2013.
