ChatGPT Work: an agent that hands back finished work, not an answer
On the same 9 July OpenAI released ChatGPT Work, an agent inside ChatGPT that stays with a project for hours, breaks it into steps on its own and hands back finished spreadsheets, slides, documents and web apps. It runs on GPT-5.6 and on Codex technology, and the separate Codex app merges into the classic ChatGPT app.
Why it matters
The product boundary moved from the answer to the result: the company is selling a delivered document rather than a conversation. With it, ChatGPT gained standing connections into the systems where work lives — Slack, Teams, Google Drive, SharePoint, email, calendars, CRMs — and the right to act in them on a schedule or on an event, not only in reply to a prompt.
The announcement came on 9 July 2026, the same day as the general release of GPT-5.6, which ChatGPT Work runs on. The agent gathers context from connected apps and files, breaks a complex project into smaller steps and completes them on its own, returning spreadsheets, slides, documents and web apps; the user follows its progress, answers its questions, changes direction and approves important actions. Connection happens through plugins to the systems where work already lives: Slack and Microsoft Teams, Google Drive and SharePoint, email, calendars, CRMs and project trackers. Scheduled Tasks let it perform an action once, repeat it on a schedule or on an event, or watch for changes. Sites shipped alongside Work in public beta, turning work into an interactive site or web app shared by URL. The desktop app gained access to local files and applications and a built-in browser. The Codex app merges into the classic ChatGPT app, which now carries Chat, Work and Codex together; Codex itself gained inline editing within diffs, pull-request review in a side panel and support for several repositories in one project. The company says more than five million people use Codex every week, more than a million of them outside software development. The rollout went by plan: on web and mobile that day for Pro, Enterprise and Edu, and for Plus and Business over the following days; in the app, Chat, Work and Codex are available on all plans, including the free one. The claim that nearly every team inside OpenAI uses ChatGPT Work and Codex, and the customer examples in the announcement, come from OpenAI itself and are not independently verified.
