Nevada admits three robotaxi fleets at once
Nevada's Transportation Authority unanimously approved applications from Tesla, Waymo and an Uber subsidiary for paid driverless rides in Clark County: up to 5,000, 1,000 and 1,000 vehicles in the first 12 months.
Why it matters
The regulator moved from permits for tens of vehicles to thousands: in July Tesla held a permit in the county for just ten robotaxis.
The vote was taken at the meeting of Thursday 20 August 2026; the release came on 21 August. Uber was approved through its subsidiary Aviari Services. The caps run for the first 12 months after a permit is issued, and permits issue once the authority's staff verify the conditions: insurance, vehicle inspection, rates, crash reports. Operations must start within 120 days. The airport is inside the area, but serving it needs the county aviation department's authorisation. Tesla Cybercab chief engineer Eric Early told the meeting, by TechCrunch, that the five thousand had always been a ceiling and that the company would be happy with 2,500 within the year.
