Obligations for general-purpose models
The first block of the EU act's rules began to apply: providers of large models must keep documentation, respect copyright and assess systemic risk.
Why it matters
General models acquired concrete obligations for the first time, not as a product in some sector but in themselves.
Until then AI regulation looked at applications: medicine, hiring, borders. Here the duty attaches to the model itself, whatever it is later put into. The code of practice, drawn up with nearly a thousand participants, stayed voluntary but carried a presumption of compliance. Its three chapters are transparency, copyright, and safety and security. Several American companies signed it late and with reservations, and one declined the safety chapter.
