The full o1 and a 200-dollar subscription
OpenAI released the full version of its reasoning model, and with it a tier at 200 dollars a month, ten times the ordinary price.
Why it matters
The price of access to the strongest model broke away from the mass tier for the first time: thinking longer became noticeably more expensive.
Until then subscriptions cost twenty dollars and gave roughly the same thing. The two-hundred-dollar tier opened a mode in which the model thinks about an answer for considerably longer, and that was the difference. Since quality is now bought with compute at answering time, cost stratified naturally: mass access to fast models and expensive access to slow ones. The full version also began accepting images.
