Subsumption architecture

Brooks proposed building a robot as layers of behaviour, each wiring perception straight to action, with higher layers suppressing lower ones.

Why it matters

A robot began acting without an internal model of the world, a direct refusal of the sense-plan-act scheme.

Each layer is a simple machine running asynchronously that does not wait for a shared picture. Lower layers keep working as higher ones are added, so the system degrades gradually instead of failing whole. Brooks stated the thesis: the world is its own best model. Robots on this architecture walked around the laboratory while planners were still computing the first step.
