Names by the rule

What changed

When the people in the index got their Ukrainian names on 26 September (An atlas that opens offline), 48 forms went in without certainty. Today they were checked against Ukrainian Wikipedia, Ukrainian spelling and the rules for carrying names over from each source language. Four changed:

• Ш’ям Санкар (Shyam Sankar) instead of «Шьям»: Ukrainian does not write a soft sign after «ш», and Wikipedia writes «Ш’ямалан» the same way.
• Вінод Наїр (Vinod Nair) instead of «Наір»: after a vowel Ukrainian writes «ї», as in «Міра Наїр».
• Люк Ван Гол (Luc Van Gool): a Belgian «Van» takes a capital, as in «Жан-Клод Ван Дам».
• Лян Веньфен (Liang Wenfeng): the title Ukrainian Wikipedia gives him.

Four records named people differently from the index («Вусук Квон», «Діого Алмейда», «Тейтелаарс», «Наір»). They now match it, and each has a raised version.

What stays as it was

For some names Ukrainian Wikipedia confirmed the current form: Dostert, Cybenko, Ng, Canny, Gowers, Jonathan Ho. The Asian, Dutch, Portuguese and French forms already follow the rules for their language. People of Russian origin keep Ukrainian forms of their first names, as Sergey Brin does.

The rest wait for the 6-in-1 to decide. Some have to be heard: Blei or «Bly», Longuet-Higgins, Sohl-Dickstein. For others there is written evidence, but it is uncertain: Rafailov’s middle name, Mitkov, points to Bulgarian origin. Ukrainian Wikipedia writes Schapire as «Шапіро», the same as the different surname Shapiro. These names are unchanged until a person checks them.

The decision

The same day the 6-in-1 decided: Девід Блай (Blei as «Bly») and Рафаел Рафаїлов (the Bulgarian form). With the name in the index, the two records that mention Blei changed too. The other names on the card stay as they are.

Then the 6-in-1 put the ten names with no evidence of pronunciation through Google Translate. Seven matched ours. Suzanne Hanauer became Сюзанна, as Wikipedia writes Suzanne Collins and Suzanne Vega. The other differences (Гелатт, Бей, Ханнун) were not taken: the translator reads the spelling as English, Herbert Bay is Swiss, and an English h goes to «г» here, as in Джефрі Гінтон (Geoffrey Hinton).
